Scroll through the Freakier Friday YouTube comment section, and after the “Chad Michael Murray” and “Lindsay Lohan back on the big screen” comments, you’ll see viewers praising an actual live-action Disney movie that isn’t adapted from a Disney animated feature or based on a comic book. Sure, it’s a sequel. But at least it’s a follow-up to a popular live-action film and not a remake, do-over, or reimagining of a classic animated film.
Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis (Everything Everywhere All at Once) reprises her role as Tess Coleman, and Lindsay Lohan returns as Anna Coleman. Also reprising their roles from 2003’s Freaky Friday are the aforementioned Murray along with Mark Harmon, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao. Julia Butters, Vanessa Bayer, Sophia Hammons, Manny Jacinto, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan also star in the body-swapping comedy.
Freaky Friday was released on August 6, 2003. The sequel will open in theaters on August 8, 2025.

“The story picks up years after Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) endured an identity crisis,” reads Disney’s synopsis. “Anna now has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice.”
The original film was directed by Mark Waters, with Nisha Ganatra directing the 2025 sequel. Kristin Burr, Andrew Gunn, and Jamie Lee Curtis serve as producers. Executive producers include Nathan Kelly, Ann Marie Sanderlin, and Lindsay Lohan.
