Oscar nominee Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction) is set to star in Paramount+ with Showtime’s The Agency spy thriller. Wright joins previously announced Oscar nominee Michael Fassbender as a series regular.
Inspired by the French series Le Bureau des Légendes, The Agency is currently in production in London. Two-time BAFTA winner Joe Wright (Pride and Prejudice) is directing the first two episodes and will serve as an executive produce. Fassbender, Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth, and Smokehouse Pictures’ George Clooney and Grant Heslov are also executive producing. The Butterworths are writing the 10-episode season.
“Jeffrey Wright doesn’t just portray characters – he inhabits them completely, infusing each role with raw, emotional power and profound, psychological insight,” stated Chris McCarthy, Paramount Global Co-CEO and President/CEO, Showtime & MTV Entertainment Studios. “We are thrilled to have him join Michael Fassbender and our creative dream team of Joe Wright, Jez and John-Henry Butterworth, Grant Heslov, and George Clooney.”
Additional executive producers include Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios’ Keith Cox and Nina L. Diaz; David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin and Bob Yari of 101 Studios; Alex Berger for TOP-The Originals Productions; and Ashley Stern and Pascal Breton for Federation Studios/Federation Entertainment of America.
“The all-new political thriller follows Martian (Fassbender), a covert CIA agent, ordered to abandon his undercover life and return to London Station. When the love he left behind reappears, romance reignites,” reads Paramount+ with Showtime’s synopsis. “His career, his real identity and his mission are pitted against his heart, hurling them both into a deadly game of international intrigue and espionage. Wright will play Henry, the Director of Operations and mentor to Martian.”
Jeffrey Wright’s recent credits include Rustin, Asteroid City, and Westworld. Next up, Wright will be seen in Spike Lee’s High and Low, The Batman Part II, and Atrabilious with Leon Addison Brown. Wright has also joined the cast of The Last Of Us season two.
