Proving romantic comedies are “in” again, Amazon MGM Studios announced a Red, White & Royal Blue sequel is in the works. Nicholas Galitzine (The Idea of You, Mary and George) and Taylor Zakhar Perez (The Kissing Booth 2 and 3) are attached to reprise their roles as Prince Henry and Alex Claremont-Diaz.
Details, including the official title, are being kept under wraps.
Matthew López returns as screenwriter, and Red, White & Royal Blue author Casey McQuiston is also confirmed to write the sequel. López and Berlanti Schechter Films’ Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Michael McGrath are producing. Author McQuiston is executive producing.
The first film, released on August 11, 2023, ranks as one of the top three most-watched romantic comedies on Prime Video.
“Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez), the son of the first woman President of the United States (Uma Thurman), and Britain’s Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine) have a lot in common: stunning good looks, undeniable charisma, international popularity…and a total disdain for each other. Separated by an ocean, their long-running feud hasn’t really been an issue, until a disastrous—and very public—altercation at a royal event becomes tabloid fodder driving a potential wedge in U.S./British relations at the worst possible time,” reads the original film’s synopsis. “Going into damage control mode, their powerful families and respective handlers force the two rivals into a staged truce. But as Alex and Henry’s icy relationship unexpectedly begins to thaw into a tentative friendship, the friction that existed between them sparks something deeper than they ever expected.”
The original film also starred Clifton Collins Jr., Sarah Shahi, Rachel Hilson, and Stephen Fry. Ellie Bamber, Thomas Flynn, Malcolm Atobrah, Akshay Khanna, Sharon D Clarke, Aneesh Sheth, and Juan Castano were also part of the ensemble of the LGBTQ love story.
