The Bad Guys are back, but this time they’re good?! That seems to be the case. Wolf (voiced by Sam Rockwell), Snake (voiced by Marc Maron), Ms. Tarantula (voiced by Awkwafina), Piranha (voiced by Anthony Ramos), and Shark (voiced by Craig Robinson) are all trying their very best to be good. They even look for jobs, but things aren’t going well for them in The Bad Guys 2.
A prime example of this is when Wolf interviews for a job at a bank and the manager says, “Now you want to work at a bank?” Wolf responds, “Why not? Some of my best memories are at banks.” “You robbed us three times,” says the manager, eyes bulging and ears laid back and down. Wolf mutters, “That was this bank?” Needless to say, Wolf didn’t get the job.
While at a sparring match with his “friend” Governor Foxington (voiced by Zazie Beetz), Wolf vents his frustrations that no one seems willing to give him and his friends a second chance. Foxington encourages him to continue trying and not give up.
But things get even worse when Wolf and his pals are kidnapped by a new criminal gang, the Bad Girls, led by Kitty Kat (voiced by Danielle Brooks). She and her friends have planned the biggest heist in history and demand Wolf and his buddies help pull it off. “Maybe you don’t keep up with the news, but we’re good now,” pleads Wolf. Unfortunately for the reformed criminal, Kitty Kat won’t take no for an answer and has leverage that she uses (no spoilers!) to force Wolf and his team to help.
“So, are we bad again?” asks Piranha once they have a minute alone. Wolf assures his friends that they will prove to the world that they are good by stopping Kitty Kat and her crew from pulling off the heist.
Based on a series of children’s books, The Bad Guys 2 is a visually stunning, slick, and action-packed sequel that is just as good as the first film. This time out it’s Looney Tunes meets Bond, James Bond, in an over-the-top, out-of-this-world caper that’s a mix of both Goldfinger and Moonraker.
The terrific voice talents return, with Sam Rockwell bringing Wolf to life with the same style, charm, and wit as in the first film. Marc Maron returns as the voice of Snake, the crabby safecracker with a secret that will shock both his friends and the audience. Craig Robinson is hilarious as Shark, the master of disguises who, this time out, keeps panicking and knocking people out at the wrong times. He declares himself a “panicker,” which is totally fitting.
The animation is vibrant, edgy, and dynamic. It looks incredible, especially in the opening sequence featuring a heist and car chase and the finale involving a space rocket ship.
The Bad Guys 2 has solid messages for the kids in the audience about not giving up, everyone deserves a second chance, and the value of friendship and loyalty. The messages are delivered without The Bad Guys 2 becoming preachy or heavy-handed.
With zany action, a great voice cast, and fantastic animation, The Bad Guys 2 is one of the best sequels to come along in years, as well as the best animated film of 2025 so far.
