Outlander‘s Caitriona Balfe has come on board Focus Features’ Sense and Sensibility as filming begins in the United Kingdom. Balfe joins previously announced stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles in the latest adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel.
Focus Features and Working Title Films announced Balfe, Frank Dillane, George MacKay, Herbert Nordrum, Bodhi Rae Breathnach, and Fiona Shaw round out the cast of the romantic drama.
BAFTA nominee Georgia Oakley (Blue Jean) is directing and Diana Reid adapted Austen’s novel. Producers include Jo Wallett, Working Title Films’ Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, and November Pictures’ India Flint.
“Originally published anonymously with the byline reading ‘By A Lady,’ Austen’s Sense and Sensibility established her as a literary force and remains a cornerstone of English literature,” reads Focus Features’ description. “The timeless exploration of restraint and passion follows sisters Elinor (Edgar-Jones) and Marianne Dashwood (Creed-Miles), opposites in their emotional approach, as they navigate love, loss, and financial uncertainty amid the societal expectations of 18th-century England. Celebrated for its wit, deep social insights, and enduring cultural relevance, the novel launched the bright career of one of history’s greatest authors.”
In addition to Outlander, Caitríona Balfe’s credits include Belfast, Ford v Ferrari, The Amateur, Now You See Me, and Super 8. Frank Dillane’s recent work includes Harris Dickinson’s Urchin, Fear the Walking Dead, and Sense8.
George MacKay starred in 1917, Pride, Captain Fantastic, and True History of the Kelly Gang. Herbert Nordrum’s resume includes The Worst Person in the World, The Royal Hotel, The Hypnosis, The King’s Choice, and Young and Promising.
Next up for Bodhi Rae Breathnach are Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet and Ric Roman Waugh’s untitled Jason Statham thriller. BAFTA Winner Fiona Shaw starred in Hot Milk, Echo Valley, IF, Killing Eve, and Fleabag.
