Apple TV+ has released the first teaser trailer for Chief of War, an upcoming historical drama that focuses on a piece of history that’s rarely talked about. Series co-creator and writer Jason Momoa stars in the nine-episode season premiering on August 1, 2025 with the release of the first two episodes.
New episodes will stream on Fridays.
In addition to Jason Momoa (See, A Minecraft Movie), Chief of War stars Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Cliff Curtis, Kaina Makua, and Moses Goods. Siua Ikale’o, Brandon Finn, James Udom, Mainei Kinimaka, Te Kohe Tuhaka, and Benjamin Hoetjes also star.

“Performed by a predominantly Polynesian cast led by Momoa, Chief of War follows the epic and unprecedented telling of the unification and colonization of Hawai’i at the turn of the 18th century,” reads Apple TV+’s synopsis of the epic historical drama. Doug Jung guides the series, described as a passion project of Momoa and co-creator Thomas Pa’a Sibbett’s, as showrunner. Executive producers include Jung, Momoa, Sibbett, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Tracey Cook, Justin Chon, and Brian Mendoza. Anders Engstrom, Jim Rowe, Molly Allen, Francis Lawrence and Tim Van Patten also serve as executive producers.
Jason Momoa directed the season finale, and Justin Chon directed the first two episodes. Oscar winner Hans Zimmer wrote the series’ theme music and also co-produced the score with composer James Everingham.
