‘Wish’ Releases Chris Pine’s Villain Song

Chris Pine's Wish Song

Chris Pine isn’t a singer but he tries his best to handle a Disney tune with “This Is The Thanks I Get?!” from Wish. The studio released a minute-long clip of Pine’s animated character, King Magnifico, performing the song. As an added bonus, Disney also released a behind-the-scenes video of Pine singing alongside clips of King Magnifico.

Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Julia Michaels and Grammy-winning producer/songwriter/musician Benjamin Rice wrote “This Is The Thanks I Get?!” as well as six additional original songs for the family-friendly animated film.

“We just had a blast with it,” said Wish director Chris Buck, commenting on Pine’s new villain song. “The visuals are terrific — he’s the King and he feels like nobody respects him. It’s been a while since we’ve had a good villain song, so Julia and Ben just went for it.”

Added director Fawn Veerasunthorn, “We’d provide a rough version of the script [to Julia and Ben] and they’d go away for a while and come back with a song. Their songs inspired us. For ‘This Is The Thanks I Get?!’ we knew we wanted Magnifico to be charming and, of course, evil. He’s also funny! In the song, he cracks jokes — he’s narcissistic. But it’s all tongue-in-cheek, and he’s still somehow completely likable, which is great for a villain.”

In addition to Chris Pine as Magnifico, the voice cast includes Oscar winner Ariana DeBose as Asha and Alan Tudyk as Asha’s favorite goat, Valentino. Angelique Cabral is Queen Amaya, Victor Garber voices Sabino, Natasha Rothwell is Sakina, Jennifer Kumiyama is Dahlia, and Evan Peters voices Simon.

Harvey Guillén lends his voice to Gabo, Ramy Youseff is Safi, Niko Vargas is Hal, Della Saba is Bazeema, and Jon Rudnitsky voices Dario.

With a nod to Walt Disney’s musical legacy as the company marks 100 years, Walt Disney Animation Studios Wish welcomes audiences to the magical kingdom of Rosas, where Asha, a sharp-witted idealist, makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force — a little ball of boundless energy called Star. Together, Asha and Star confront a most formidable foe — the ruler of Rosas, King Magnifico — to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen.

Wish is set to open in theaters on November 22, 2023. The soundtrack will drop on November 17th.
